DAI Presents EC-Funded Study on Uganda Land Governance

DAI recently hosted a workshop in Kampala, Uganda, on the implementation of the country’s national land policy (NLP). The workshop presented the findings of a seven-week capacity assessment to support the implementation of the NLP.

The workshop was attended by the Minister for Lands, Daudi Migereko, Permanent Secretary Gabindadde Musoke, and approximately 80 other participants, including ministry staff and development partners.

In February 2013, the NLP was approved by the Uganda Cabinet, marking the end of a comprehensive national consultation process with numerous stakeholders and debates on the best course of action to address the historical challenges of land governance and sustainable land use in the country.

In support of the NLP, an implementation action plan was developed, prioritizing various actions needed to prepare for the countrywide adoption of the NLP. As part of this plan, a DAI-led study was carried out to assess the capacity of the land institutions in Uganda to implement the NLP. Under a European Commission contract, DAI identified gaps and made recommendations on how to improve land governance and strengthen land institutions.

DAI’s Margie Cook Named Officer of the Order of Australia

DAI’s Margie Cook has been named an Officer of the Order of Australia. Cook was recognized on January 26, Australia Day, for her “service to the international community through the promotion of democratic electoral systems, and to human rights,” in a distinguished career that includes work in Afghanistan, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe.
