Projects

DAI projects cover the full spectrum of development disciplines. We are building local capacity to fight disease in outbreak hot spots around the world. We are training local armed forces in civil-military relations in Africa, and we are active in the education sector in Palestine. Working arm in arm with local organizations, we have strengthened the credit system for Moroccan entrepreneurs, helped Haiti’s hillside farmers raise their incomes, improved natural resource management in the Philippines, mitigated conflict in Liberia, and fostered responsive local governments in Serbia. In all of our projects, we emphasize inclusion, participation, and sustainability.

Democratic Republic of the Congo—Programme De Bonne Gouvernance (PBG)

Since its independence in 1960, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has struggled to devise institutions that can provide effective governance for its vast and diverse land mass and for its diverse and long-suffering people. The Programme de Bonne Gouvernance (PBG), or Good Governance Program, works to improve the management capacity and accountability of select legislatures and local governments by working closely with civil society and community-based organizations, parliamentary institutions at the central and provincial levels, and public institutions with a stake and role in decentralization.

Democratic Republic of the Congo—Security Sector Accountability and Police Reform Programme (SSAPR)

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has for decades been riven by war, corruption, and inadequate governance. Too often, the security and police forces have been part of the problem rather than the solution for the Congolese people, operating within a culture of impunity that perpetuates a cycle of violence, conflict, and criminality. If we are to help address poverty and establish democratic systems responsive to the needs of the DRC’s citizens, we must simultaneously address this fundamental issue of human security. SSAPR is working to improve the DRC’s capacity to provide security, safety, and justice for all.

At the same time, growing markets for certified specialty coffees, high-quality fruits and vegetables, and ecotourism offer opportunities to generate income and improve environmental quality.

Equatorial Guinea—Technical Support Program to the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea (EGTSP)

Most Equatoguineans live in poverty, lack education, and suffer from poor health. Ethiopia—Urban Gardens Program for HIV-Affected Women and Children (UGP)

With a population vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and poverty, Ethiopia needs innovative ways to enable its people to lead healthier, more productive lives. Lack of access to food for HIV-vulnerable populations is especially acute in cities, where land and water are scarce and food options are limited, and where food is expensive due to high transport costs and inefficient agriculture markets. Haiti—Economic Development for a Sustainable Environment (DEED)

Environmental degradation in Haiti is the worst in the Western Hemisphere—a cause and result of the country’s economic decline.
